Expert to investigate deaths at University
Professor David Coggon from the University of Southampton is an expert in epidemiology - the study of factors affecting the health and illness of populations. He is to investigate possible health risks at Manchester University's Rutherford Building.
The building has been linked with the deaths of five people from cancer, the building is where Nobel prize-winning nuclear physicist Ernest Rutherford experimented with radon and polonium in 1908.
The professor has previously investigated a cluster of cancer cases among workers at a Ford factory and also Gulf War Syndrome.
The Health Protection Agency has also been commissioned to assist with his review. Fears about the building emerged following the deaths of two lecturers in the university's psychology department, which occupied the building until recently.
