Psychiatric probe into bank thief

A worker who stole £50,000 from an Edinburgh bank to pay off student loans is to be assessed by a psychiatrist before sentencing.

Greig Smith, 29,was employed as assistant bank manager at The Bank of Scotland, opened more than 60 bogus student bank accounts at the branch where he had worked for six years.

He took advantage of an overdraft offer to withdraw up to £1,000 on each account during the nine-month fraud. The scam was uncovered during a routine audit by the bank in 2007.

The court earlier heard how Smith who pled guilty to fraud, suffers from depression, believes he has a personality disorder and was treated in a psychiatric hospital as a teenager.

Sheriff John Horsburgh, QC, agreed to postpone proceedings and allow Smith to remain on bail until next month while a psychiatric report is prepared.
