CPS barrister admits bribe
A senior Crown Prosecution Service barrister has admitted to a £20,000 bribe to drop a case against an undercover officer posing as a man charged with assault. CPS barrister Sarfraz Ibrahim, who had been a practising lawyer for 19 years, was set up in a sting operation by the Serious Organized Crime Agency (SOCA), an undercover police officer posed as a criminal guilty of assault.
Ibrahim has admitted to corruption, attempting to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office. His co-defendant, Saifur Rahman Khan, now stands trial for aiding and abetting misconduct in public office and attempting to pervert the course of justice, charges which he denies.
The prosecutor, Jonathan Laidlaw, alleged that Ibrahim and Khan received the £20,000 bribe in cash from the undercover officer in a Hilton hotel in Cardiff. After the arrest of Ibrahim, it was revealed that he had substantial debts of almost £1 million.
