Specialist expert witness training pays off for Chartered Surveyor

Surveyors such as Mike Hull, Managing Director of commercial valuers SMC in West Yorkshire, has found his expert witness services increasingly in demand in the areas of property, matrimonial and professional negligence disputes.

To boost his expertise in litigation and increase his courtroom skills, he took the RICS Advanced Professional Award in Expert Witness Evidence. Candidates are trained to identify and avoid any potential bias, and to present evidence of the highest standard, with thorough explanations of the logic behind any opinions expressed.

Mike believes the current increase in demand for his services is down to friction caused by a lack of flexibility in the market.

“When money is tight, the fine detail can become crucially important, and vendors, purchasers and landlords will take extra care to ensure they are getting the most out of each deal – which can lead to disputes,” he says. “It can be challenging and quite demanding work, but the role of expert witness allows us to add value to our relationships with the legal profession and our own commercial clients.”
