Judge attacks government over family life breakdown

A leading judge launched an attack on the Government yesterday over the breakdown of family life.

Mr Justice Coleridge warned the fracturing of society would, within 20 years, "be as marked and as destructive as global warming".

The Family Division judge, 58, said that in urban areas family life was "in meltdown or completely unrecognisable".

He told a Brighton conference that children born into broken homes were increasingly turning to drink, drugs and crime, and the results were affecting the mental health of parents and children across the country.

The judge was addressing about 450 lawyers from Resolution, formerly the Solicitors' Family Law Association.

He said: "In some areas of the country - family life in the old sense no longer exists.

"And what is government doing to recognise and face up to the emerging situation?

"The answer is very little and nothing”
