West Yorkshire Police Authority has appointed a new Chief Executive.

Fraser Sampson, currently Executive Director of the Civil Nuclear Police Authority, will take over from current Chief Executive Catherine Archer who retires from the post in June.

In his new role he will work with members of the Authority, who oversee policing on behalf of the public, to help them ensure that the policing of West Yorkshire is efficient, effective and meets local needs.

Mr Sampson, aged 45, has strong links with the police service having served as an officer in various ranks for 20 years.

After leaving Queen Elizabeth Grammar School in Wakefield he joined the former West Yorkshire Metropolitan Police in 1981 moving to British Transport Police in Leeds a year later. He worked in several roles before being seconded to National Police Training in Harrogate in 1996, where he was later promoted to Superintendent.

During this time he gained qualifications in law from the universities of London, Leicester and Oxford and an MBA from Leeds University Business School.

In 2001 he left British Transport Police to train to become a solicitor with Police Federation solicitors Russell Jones & Walker in Leeds. In 2003 he set up a Police Law Unit at Walker Morris Solicitors in Leeds ahead of taking up his current post as the first Executive Director of the Civil Nuclear Police Authority.

He said: “I am delighted to be appointed to this role. It is a challenging yet exciting opportunity to support members of the West Yorkshire Police Authority in shaping the way the county is policed.”
