Lawyers join forces against breast surgeon

Solicitors representing 30 patients claiming negligent treatment from a suspended breast surgeon are working together for quicker case handling. The solicitors from Raleys, LA Steel, Irwin Mitchell, and Mills, Kemp & Brown met on 19 May to discuss their cases against Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

They are acting for 30 patients who have suffered injury and disfigurement after undergoing operations at Barnsley Hospital carried out by suspended consultant breast surgeon Puvaneswary Markandoo.

Miss Markandoo was suspended from working Barnsley Hospital in July 2006 after concerns were raised by a number of patients about her conduct. The General Medical Council is currently carrying out an investigation and she is under an order not to carry out surgery until 5 August 2008. There is unlikely to be a decision about further action for the foreseeable future.
